Distribution and exhibition
Our Distribution and Exhibition Department works to make non-mainstream films more widely available to cinema audiences.
Last year, less than 100 films (out of 505 released in the UK) accounted for more than 80% of the total box office generated. The good news is, audience for non-mainstream films is growing year on year. When cinema-goers know when and where they're being screened – so-called non-mainstream films like Brokeback Mountain, March of the Penguins, Closer, Volver and Pan's Labyrinth can attract large audiences.
We work to make non-mainstream films more accessible in three ways:
- Improving access – our Digital Screen Network is made up of 240 digital screens across the UK that now show non-mainstream films regularly.
- Raising awareness – Our Prints and Advertising Fund provides £4 million every year to help British distributors promote non-mainstream films.
- Increasing information – our website, www.myfilms.com provides information about non-mainstream films.
