Audience Development

The UK Film Council has created an Audience Development Scheme as a key part of our long-term strategy to extend choice for UK cinema goers.

Cinema Audience The more choice audiences have, the more likely they are to choose a non-mainstream film – a fact demonstrated by the success of foreign language films in the UK over the past few years.

Since 2003, 26 foreign language films have grossed over £1 million each at the UK box office. Over half of these were supported by the UK Film Council to achieve a wider release, showing at an average of 113 screens across the UK. In contrast, only seven foreign language films grossed £1 million between 2000 and 2003, showing at an average 24 screens.
